A must-visit for any gap year traveller, for anyone interested in extreme sports, and a skiing Mecca in the winter, Queenstown is also a beacon of urban sophistication amongst the natural ruggedness and wilds of New Zealand's south island.

Despite its reputation for taking advantage of all the opportunities of the great outdoors, the town itself, set on the banks of Lake Wakatipu, is picturesque and, despite its bijou size, boasts a healthy late-night life.

Among the noisy pubs that crowd the pavements there is a selection of decent bars and good restaurants that cater to the refined tastes of a truly international crowd, after all this is New Zealand's most popular destination for foreign visitors. A short cab ride from Queenstown is Arrowtown, a pretty small town built on the fortunes that were made in gold mining. A couple of bars there make up the numbers for our Drinker's Dozen.
