Review

Originally a storeroom for the old suit company above, this speakeasy-like bar is named after the old sign emblazoned high above on the front of the building. A wall light marks its discrete entrance with a narrow wooden staircase leading down to the basement.

This bar is owned, run and was built by bartenders. When Andy Kerr took over the lease early in 2014 their first task was to scrape away the old plaster and paint to expose the low wooden ceiling joists and bare brickwork. They honed the back bar shelves from an old oak wardrobe and galvanised trunking links industrial light fittings with filament bulbs providing dim lighting. The intimate space is sparsely decorated and furnished with a few seating areas and stools around the bar counter. A vintage tailor's dummy serves as reminder of the area's rag trade past.

The one page cocktail list boasts six very tasty 'house' creations (be sure to try the Goldfish Bathtub) and a spattering of classics but it also states, "we don't just do 'off the peg' please ask your bartender for a cocktail tailored to your exact tastes." They also offer a brilliant Neal's Yard cheese board.
