Review

Victoria lies on a street where you wouldn’t expect to find such a cool, upmarket lounge bar. Perhaps this helps explain the diverse crowd of mature locals that flock here.

The long, narrow room exudes luxury and style. The dark planks of wood that vertically line the walls are interspersed with modern art and graphics. Twin lounge areas with booth seating lie at either end of the bar counter, which practically runs the length of the room and is fronted by a neat row of comfy, leather-upholstered bar stools. The illuminated back bar is packed with premium spirits, while shaded hanging lights emit a golden glow, and the smoky atmosphere is filled with a mix of jazz, soul and reggae.

Mature, experienced bartenders in pressed white shirts and neckties serve some spectacular cocktails from a choice of nearly 200, all listed by spirit base in an impressive red-bound menu. The style continues with the small glass of soda water served to accompany each cocktail. Beware the lovely Bettina (AKA ‘Beat’) and her ‘Hildegard Knef Gedaechtnis-Gedeck’: basically a shot of vodka chased with a shot of champagne.
