Vox is a classic, top spec, hotel bar. Curved leather seats, black polished wood, stainless steel, and a baby grand in the corner. The barmen are suited, and the barwomen have their hair scraped into a tight bun. This is a slickly run establishment.
Whilst Vox’s strength is its impeccability, it’s also its weakness. The cloying formality means that everyone sits with a slightly straighter back than they otherwise might. The bottles behind the bar are positioned with anal precision: a wall of identically spaced whiskies, except for a single Vox vodka placed in the centre of the top shelf.
The precision continues with a black leather and suede drinks menu. Thirteen pages of double-sided, perfectly categorized drinks presented in a ring binder file. There are 11 different choices of water alone, and an entire liquid kitchen drinks page.
Having said this, the cocktails were of a high standard, and the food was memorable: big platters of sushi, washed down with one of the five sakes on offer.
Despite its rigidity, Vox is a great bar, particularly if you are looking for a night with cocktail-sipping professionals rather than cocktail-guzzling locals.
