Review

Sylvain is a sister bar to Ste. Marie and is the only new bar in the French Quarter that we thought worth including here. It offers decent cocktails and gastro-pub food in a pub-like setting, with dark woods, a dark colour palate, stuffed animal heads for company and decadent touches like mini chandeliers. Enter the bar not from the doors on the street but via the side alley, which opens into a mini courtyard.

The menu offers 12 drinks, mostly classics, some with the gentlest of twists - a Champagne Cocktail with homemade lavender syrup for example - and some attributed to other modern classic bars such as New York's Death & Co. The drinks are on the pricier side here, from $9 to $12 each, though are served in utilitarian glassware, none too fancy, though are well made. The back-bar contains plenty of dropper bottles, though tend to be simply decanted bitters apart from that lavender hotel.

In addition to the main room, there's a garden out back - continue down the alley you entered the bar through and there's a shady, leafy space with tables and chairs. The beef cheeks are a must on the menu, and the Bolognese is pretty good too.
