Review

The Wayland is a neighbourhood corner bar with real substance. Cocktails made with fresh ingredients, craft beers, tasty food served till 4am, live music and friendly proficient service.

The marble topped counter weaves its way along the far wall of this delightfully unpretentious bar like an angular question mark. There's nothing particularly noteworthy about the white-walled interior but the floorboards were salvaged from the 19th century school up the street. The simple décor, atmosphere and live bands playing at the far end of the bar (Sunday to Wednesday), give The Wayland something of a New Orleans vibe.

Any bar with live music needs beer and The Wayland offers a well curated choice of American craft brews However, any bar can serve cold beer and we're more impressed by the well-executed cocktails such as the Maiden Marmalade (cognac, burnt orange marmalade, lemon and sugar) and Spice Trade Mule (vodka, lemon, lime, fresh ginger and cinnamon infused agave syrup).

The food offering at The Wayland is also above that of your average bar and even more unusually is served right through until 4am every night. Don't miss out on the Fried Fingerling Potatoes (small potatoes wedges fried with rosemary and served with bagna cauda aioli).
