Lying among the suburban streets of Stockwell, The Canton Arms retains the shabby chic interior of a down-at-heel boozer but with a distinctly upmarket food offering. Sister to the renowned Anchor & Hope, foodies trek here from across south London and the large back area beyond the sprawling central bar is given over to mismatched old tables exclusively for diners.
Large jars of homemade pickles and chutneys on shelves about the pub are a sign of the cooking style - simple and ingredient led with starters such as "smoked cod's roe, warm new potatoes, pickled red cabbage and dill" and "squid, Spanish rice and ailoli". While "poached chicken, new season garlic and peas" is a typical example of the mains with meat falling off the bone and melting in the mouth. Sunday roasts are notable both for their quality and generous proportions.
The drinks offering does not live up to that of the food but expect a choice of three cask ales on hand pump and a fair wine selection.
Like its sister pub, The Canton Arms operates a no bookings policy but tables are much easier to come by than at the Anchor & Hope.
