Piñata Cantina brings plenty of Mexican spirit to Barcelona's Sant Antoni neighbourhood, combining authentic Mexican cooking with an impressive collection of agave spirits. Opened in 2019, this colourful cantina occupies a corner spot on Carrer de Casanova, where its vibrant décor, welcoming atmosphere and shelves of mezcal and tequila set the scene.
The extensive spirits collection is the main attraction for agave enthusiasts, with more than 300 Mexican distillates available by the glass. These include 178 mezcals made from over 18 agave species, 88 tequilas, 13 sotols, and eight raicillas, alongside bacanora and charanda. Producers represented include Real Minero, Rey Campero, Koch, Del Maguey, Fortaleza, Siete Leguas and Cascahuín. An unusually detailed online spirits list identifies the agave variety, village and producer behind each bottling, encouraging exploration beyond familiar labels.
Cocktails are equally important, with classic and fruit-flavoured Margaritas, Palomas and house creations offering plenty of alternatives to sipping agave spirits neat.
The kitchen draws particularly on the flavours of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, serving handmade tortillas made from nixtamalised corn, freshly prepared tacos, guacamole, quesadillas and regional specialities such as cochinita pibil and mole negro.
