Review

A mixed international upscale hotel elite give this famous little cocktail bar something of the air of an upmarket shrink's waiting room. And Colin Field, the resident practitioner come mixologist is rightly highly sought after, hence the high price of his prescriptions.

Bar Hemingway is tucked away in a back corner of the huge Ritz hotel by its rear entrance on the Rue Cambon. It comprises one tiny room with an even smaller adjunct attached by a few steps.

This bar was a favourite haunt of Ernest Hemingway, hence the eponymous name, and photographs of the big man hang around the walls. An old split cane fishing rod stands upright on the wall behind the bar and a superb bronze of El Papa sits proudly in the corner.

Small circular wooden tables are crowded with well-to-do international tourists, many of whom are regulars. Colin's Serendipity Cocktail is the house special but you should also try his French 75 (ask to see the cartridge) and his "clean" Dirty Martini.
