Away from the main drag of Camden, The Engineer is a glammed-up, modern gastro pub on a pretty residential street that is best reached by walking west from the Lock along the canal. It's light and airy, the interior has colourful touches and there are fresh cut flowers. Quite the locals kind of place, but here the locals are trendy and wealthy and tend to bring their accessory dogs with them. Apparently Gwyneth Paltrow is a fan but on our visit horse racing guru John McCririck was the only 'celebrity' in sight.
Perhaps the best part of The Engineer is its beautiful walled garden, with shady vines overhead and olive trees growing in pots - a joy to sit amongst on sunny days. Pick a glass of cold white wine from the enormous wine list that has punchy tasting notes on each - there's also a good selection of artisan beers and a large spirits list (for a pub). There are a dozen classic cocktails on offer and a similar number of house twists, some with pun-tastic names - enthusiastically made if not finessed.
