The Woolpack (or The Woolly) lacks the finesse and quality of food found in the Garrison opposite but is one of very few places in Bermondsey with a beer garden. The outdoor, walled patio with its bamboo fence, picnic tables and street signs make it a firm favourite when the sun shines, while an oversized parasol and heaters help extend its usability outside the fleeting British summer.
Inside, six booths with banquette seating surrounding square tables run along an original tiled wall (uncovered during refurbishment). The décor is 70s inspired and utilitarian rather than designer. The lounge upstairs boasts a low-res printed renaissance ceiling and even if you're spending the afternoon in the suntrap of a beer garden, pop up and take a close look at the cherubs' faces and you should spot some of the pub's owners.
Friendly staff and the availability of tables, particularly upstairs make this a favourite for our POETS day afternoon staff meetings. (Be sure to reserve a table for evening use). Doom Bar, Timothy Taylor Landlord and Sambrook's Wandle are regulars on hand pump with a good selection of euro lagers on draught augmented by a good offering of bottles.
