Address: 30 Sonntagstrasse, Berlin, 10245, Germany
Now permanently closed.
Sonntagstrasse, the name of the road this bar sits on, literally translates as 'Sunday Street'. And what do folk do on Sundays? They go to Chapel.
Located near the Ostkreuz S-Bahn stop, Sonntagstrasse boasts a strip which houses the Chapel and numerous other bars and restaurants. In warmer summer months all the action spills out onto the street. This is not an upscale area and the Chapel and its drinks offering sit well above that of the immediate competition.
When we visited (02-Aug-11), the Chapel had only very recently opened, and some parts of the building remained a work-in-progress - a door at the far corner of this L-shaped room will eventually lead to a further cavernous bar space. The very dark interior is definitely designer, yet raw with dark grey walls, topped by plaster cornices and vintage wing-back chairs opposite modern stools, but the most striking feature is the warm light cast by the huge cut glass chandelier.
Michael Layer, creator of the 'Voodoo I Do' cocktail, is the very hospitable 'bar chef' here, and this brilliantly named drink is one of few originals on a very classically led menu.
