Described as the "the original wheated bourbon", this Kentucky straight bourbon is distilled at Buffalo Trace. The W.L. Weller brand dates from the late 1800s. Julian P. 'Pappy' Van Winkle started working for the original W.L. Weller Co. in the 1890s eventually becoming its president.

Appearance:

(sample 2014 release) Clear, deep bronze.

Aroma:

Pencil shavings, mollasses, plums and toffee with cinnamon and cloves. Red wine , oak and clove with water.

Taste:

Full-bodied, rich and generous. Red wine soaked dry toasty oak with plum fruit, clove and black pepper spice. More red wine notes and tannins with water.

Aftertaste:

Dry and spicy with lingering tannins.

Overall:

Huge in every respect with pencil shaving like dry oak, clove spice and red wine tannins.
