Lunched in 1992, Mount Gay Extra Old is blended from pot and column distilled rums aged 8-12 years. In Barbados, the locals refer to this by its nickname of 'Mount Gay Black'. It is common to hear bar calls of 'Black & Coke' alongside an order of 'Bread and Two', a popular, local, fried fish dish.

We have heard unsubstantiated rumours that prune wine and brandy essence are also added to improve this rum's flavour.

Appearance:

Clear, golden amber with polished gold highlights.

Aroma:

Spicy apricot, ripe banana and vanilla with rum and raison ice-cream.

Taste:

Fiery but velvety, honeyed with cooked fruit, ripe banana, toffee apple and sweet pastry notes overlaid with spicy oak - cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg.

Aftertaste:

Long dry oaky finish. Light-bodied but wonderfully rich and full-flavoured.
