Named Los Valientes (the Valiant Ones) in honour of the brave fighters of the Mexican Revolution, this rum is made by the Villanueva family who, for three generations, have distilled spirits in the town of Cordoba, within Mexico's coastal province of Veracruz.
The Veracruz area has been famous for its sugar cane plantations, since the middle of the sixteenth century when the grass was first introduced to America by the Spanish Conquistadores.
Apparently, and rather unusually, Los Valientes is a blend of 70 per cent double pot-distilled rum made from sugar cane juice (i.e. rhum agricole) and 30 per cent column-distilled molasses rum. These rums are charcoal filtered before being aged in well-matured American white oak ex-whiskey barrels.
