Created in 1991, Deuchars IPA (pronounced Dew-kars' and not 'Dew-chars’) is named after and inspired by Robert Deuchar, a entrepreneurial brewer who acquired a brewery in Edinburgh in the 1890s.
Deuchars IPA is brewed using Pale Optic and Golden Promise malts topped with brewing sugar. The wort is boiled in Caledonian’s magnificent direct gas fired copper kettles with whole-leaf Fuggle and Aurora hops added early. Savinjski Goldings, more Aurora and Savinjski are late hopped with Willamette in the hop back.
Sampled on 18/07/2013
(sample best before 31-May-15) Clear, coppery amber with retentive white head.
Floral and citrusy hops with underlying malt strangely reminiscent of marmite covered toast (surly a good thing?). Light caramel and faint pear skin.
Medium bodied, lightly malty with moderately bitter citrus and pine hops, candied citrus peel.
Pleasantly bitter citrusy hops with lingering floral flavours.
Citrusy hop led but delicately so with underlying toasty malt and faint floral notes.
