The Barq's Brothers Bottling Co. was founded in 1890 in the French Quarter of New Orleans, by Edward Charles Edmond and Gaston Barq to bottle carbonated water and soft drinks of their own creation. In 1897 Edward Barq moved to Biloxi, Mississippi and soon opened the Biloxi Artesian Bottling Works.
Shortly afterwards he started producing "Barq's which later became Barq's Root Beer. It was not at first launched as a root beer as the company wished to avoid legal conflict with the Hires Root Beer Company, which was attempting a trademark claim on the term "root beer." Coca-Cola Company acquired the company in 1995.

Clear, deep tawny brown with ruby glints (no head).
Bubble-gum, liquorice and cola with mild antiseptic-like sarsaparilla and faint mint.
Sweet. Berry fruit, sherbet and sarsaparilla with lemonade and cola.
Mild sarsaparilla lingers in the sweet finish.
