Released in August 2014, this non-age-statement Mortlach is a blend of malts aged in four different types of casks: 1st fill ex-bourbon, refill ex-bourbon, heavily charred hogsheads and sherry seasoned European oak casks.

The choice of the unusual 43.4% bottling strength was inspired by vintage labels stating a 86.8 proof for export to the USA.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 22/08/2014

Appearance:

Clear, golden amber.

Aroma:

Earthy, nutty and fruity with green apple and pear. Notes of fennel seed, flaky pastry, grilled almond/amaretto. Water amplifies fennel seed and reveals faint floral honeysuckle.

Taste:

Fruity and superbly balanced. Fruit cake/Eccles cakes with flaky pastry, toasty oak, earthy cinnamon and fennel spice. Water brings out more earthiness, nutmeg, fennel and black pepper spice.

Aftertaste:

Faintly metallic, earthy, fennel finish with stewed orchard fruit and cacao.
