Launched in April 2015, Firkin Gin is made in batches (by an undisclosed Scottish distiller) of around 250 bottles. It is distilled with 4 botanicals (juniper, coriander seed, angelica root and orris root) and then aged for around 3 mouths in American oak whisky casks. (A firkin is a type of cask.)

Each bottle is individually hand-filled, corked, sealed, labelled and wax dipped.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 27/12/2015

Appearance:

Clean, golden amber.

Aroma:

Pungent spicy resinous pine, eucalyptus and hay. Faint hints of smoky bacon/ Frazzles crisps. Water reveals lemon barley water and crushed mint leaves.

Taste:

Piney juniper, dry toasty oak, warming spice and faint mint.

Aftertaste:

Bark and smouldering wood with lingering aniseed and warming spice.

Overall:

A big assertive gin with a high bottling strength amplifying dry oak tannins from oak aging – perhaps for too long, or in under seasoned casks.
