Launched in March 2017, Tributo 2017 is the second release in Havana Club's Tributo collection and comprises 2,500 bottles. The press release which accompanied our sample says "The 'aguardiente' is at the heart of this rum, and has been enhanced by maturation in barrels that are over 80 years old."

Each bottle is individually numbered.

Review and Tasting

Appearance:

Clear, deep golden amber. Noticeably thick tears on glass.

Aroma:

Wood varnish, caramel, honey, tobacco leaf and cigar box with faint clove and white pepper spice.

Taste:

Bitter and slightly astringent wood tannins cut through honeyed richness and raisin fruit with tobacco, bitter chocolate and wood varnish.

Aftertaste:

Dry spicy finish with more tannins and wood varnish.

Overall:

This is a big rum, which (partly due to its limited availability) has an equally high price tag. Being generous, this is a perfect cigar rum, with the body and flavour to match a Cuban cigar with a ring gauge in the 50s. But as a sipping rum, it is perhaps overly aged, woody and tannic – hence our rating.
