Column distilled in 1998 and aged in small oak casks, this rum made at Guyana’s now closed Uitvlugt Distillery.
Neil Mathieson (Managing Director of specialist drinks importers Eau de Vie) started laying down stocks of rum in the 1990, continually adding “suitable bulk fillings” over the years. The result is the Mezan Barrique XO and Mezan Single Cask rum range, all bottled without filtration, colouring or sweetening. Bottled under contract, these are released once or twice a year depending on sales and Neil’s stated ethos is to continue this, “offering completely natural rums with no further cask influence, through wood or wine finishing.”
Sampled on 17/09/2011
Clear, bright golden.
Subdued muscovado sugar, golden syrup and overripe banana nose with vanilla and a slight whiff of yacht varnish.
Dry, light/medium palate with sweet ripe banana, vanilla and dried tropical fruit balanced by spicy oaky tannins.
Medium finish with more tropical fruit, lingering buttery vanilla and lightly tannic oak - fades with salty spicy oak.
