Manifest is based on Jägermeister’s original 1935 recipe, but with additional botanicals added to the 56 herbs, roots and spices, and a higher bottling strength (of 38% rather than 35% alc./vol.).
Jägermeister original is made with four different macerations in neutral spirit lasting 42 days. Manifest uses the same botanicals in these four macerations but in a wheat distillate for an extended period of 9 to 12 months. These macerations are also 350 times more concentrated than those used to make Jägermeister original. Manifest additionally comprises a fifth maceration with four botanicals (including vanilla and dried fruit), designed to bridge the effect of the more concentrated and longer maceration process.
Manifest is then “double-barrelled matured in both small and large German and American oak casks for over a year, to intensify flavours.” It contains around 10% less caramelised sugar than original Jägermeister.
Described by Jägermeister as “the world’s first super-premium herbal liqueur”, Jägermeister Manifest launched in February 2017. Manifest is best appreciated neat and slightly chilled (6-8˚C / 42-46˚F).
Sampled on 28/02/2017
Clear, deep amber (but not as dark as original Jägermeister).
Predominantly pine, aniseed and caramel with menthol and complex herbal scents.
Piney (more than oak) and enlivening spice, smoothed by rich caramel, vanilla and liquorice, with dried fruit and very complex rooty herbal notes.
Herbal (particularly thyme), piney with subtle aniseed and menthol freshness.
Rounder and more complex than original Jägermeister, Manifest sits squarely alongside, and competes with, the very best of the traditional Italian amari. However, Manifest’s flavour remains identifiable as part of the Jägermeister family.
