Aultmore Distillery was so nearly a casualty of the many disasters to hit the whisky in-dustry – a boom and bust cycle that counts the Pattison crash, Prohibition and the Great Depression, two world wars and the 1980s surplus. Thankfully Aultmore survived to become part of the Dewar’s White Label blend with the single malt sometimes dubbed the ‘rarest of Speyside’.

Often clocked in fog, Aultmore sits in a secluded spot by the winding Buckie Road in the sweeping hills of Moray, just north of the town of Keith.

The misty winding Buckie Road

The vicinity surrounding the distillery is sparsely populated and includes an area known as Foggie Moss, previously a rich source of peat. The seclusion, abundant peat and nearby Burn of Auchinderran (the distillery’s water source) made the location popular with illicit distillers.
