The Dalwhinnie distillery lies in the Central Highlands, close to the Drumochter Pass (A9), which leads south to Perth and north to Inverness. Built in 1897 to take advantage of the newly completed Highland railway, Dalwhinnie is the second highest distillery in Scotland (the highest until Braeval was built in 1973) and records some of the lowest average temperatures in Scotland. Several employees live on-site, enabling production to continue on the frequent occasions the roads to the distillery are impassable.
The name is a corruption of the Gaelic word ‘Dail-chuninnidh’ meaning ‘meeting place’. The distillery burn ‘Allt an t’sluic’, is fed by a pure spring of snowmelt mountain water. Dalwhinnie is part of the ‘Classic Malts of Scotland’ range and is nicknamed the ‘Gentle Spirit’.
