Midtown Manhattan, or simply Midtown, is an area of Manhattan, New York City, generally accepted as lying between 14th Street and 59th Street, from the Hudson River to the East River. Midtown Manhattan is home to landmarks such as the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and Times Square with notable addresses including Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue and West 42nd Street.
Whatever you seek, be it pub, lounge or club, the diversity of Midtown Manhattan's venues ensures your tastes will be catered for. That is, of course, assuming that you make it through the velvet rope - New York has some of the world's hardest doors.
The smoking ban spawned a wave of open air, rooftop venues where the addicted could enjoy their habit in the company of more health conscious friends, while the speakeasy style "secret" lounges now seem to outnumber wine bars. However, the most exciting change in New York's bars is a move, at the top end of the scene, towards quality cocktails lovingly made with fresh juices.
Most clubs close around 4am although some are open all night. It is illegal to serve alcohol after 4am (midnight on Sundays). The minimum drinking age is 21 and even bald 40-somethings may be asked for photo ID.
