Courvoisier is widely accepted as being the first cognac to establish the Napoléon standard and this Fine Champagne was launched in the 1920s. A blend of over 25 eau-de-vie, with an average age of 15 to 25 years, older than some other house's XO Cognacs.

In 1811 Napoléon I visited the Gallois family's warehouse in Paris, the chief merchants selling Courvoisier family cognacs, and legend has it that subsequently Bonaparte took several barrels of Courvoisier with him to exile on St. Helena. What is certain is that in 1869 his nephew, Napoléon III bestowed the title of "Purveyor by Special Appointment to the Court of Napoléon III" to Courvoisier. This certificate is now proudly displayed at the Courvoisier museum in Jarnac along with many other Napoléonic artefacts.

Review and Tasting

Sampled before 1st May 2011

Aroma:

Strong Christmas cake, prune and cigar box.

Taste:

Classic Napoléon style - elegant with hints of oxidised port wine, bags of vanilla and honeyed fruit nut with a hazelnut, spicy gingerbread and liquorice edge and faint hints of orange blossom.
