Magellan is based on neutral spirit triple distilled from Capet, a type of wheat grain grown in the French Beauce Valley. The botanicals are distilled with this in a copper pot still, and the resulting gin is then infused with orris root and flowers, which give Magellan its blue hue.

This French gin, like the Strait of Magellan, is named after Ferdinand Magellan, who left Spain with five ships in 1519 to circumnavigate the globe in search of a westward route to the Spice Islands. Three years later one ship returned to Spain bearing eighteen survivors and a cargo of precious spices. Magellan himself did not survive his quest but his journey is commemorated in this gin which is flavoured with juniper berries, cassia, grains of paradise, cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg, liquorice, cloves, cardamom and orange peel.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 06/12/2010

Appearance:

Magellan looks great - if you like your gin blue-rinsed.

Taste:

Sadly the colour is about the best thing this slightly sweet, floral spirit has going for it.
