Released in 2011, this blended (vatted) malt is the result of a collaboration between a group of 7independent Scottish distilleries who each donated a cask of single malt to produce a one-off whisky, the proceeds of which they are donating to the relief efforts in Japan and Christchurch, New Zealand
The distillers, representing Island, Speyside, Highland, Islay, Campbeltown and Lowland malt whisky regions are Arran, Benriach, Bladnoch, Glendronach, Mitchell's Glengyle, Kilchoman and Springbank. Some 2,000 bottles were produced with 1,200 available in the UK with the remainder shipped to Japan and donated to New Zealand to sell to raise funds to assist with the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake.
Not a penny of profit will be taken from the project by any of the parties involved and even the packaging is being donated free of charge by Chesapeake Branded Packaging. It is conservatively estimated that at least £50,000 will be raised. We were happy to make our own contribution by purchasing the bottle used for this tasting.
Sampled on 01/03/2011
Clear, very pale straw yellow.
Burnt meringue, boiled sweet tropical/apple fruit and overripe banana nose with modeler's balsa wood, wisps of apple wood smoke and faint new rubber-soled shoes.
Sweet smoky plastic palate (in a good way) with a malty, earthy body and chewy rubber flavours.
Lingering, leathery vanillin, apple wood smoke.
