London Velvet is a blend of traditionally brewed porter ale and West Country cider.

William Sharvatt is said to have owned a timber yard in London’s Old Kent Road during the 1890s. The story goes that when he received timber from the West Country it would be accompanied by generous quantities of cider which he mixed 50/50 with locally brewed porter ale, “making a drink he described as “tasting like pure velvet”, the birth of London Velvet.”
