One of four seasonally themed gins developed by Jurgen Lijcops, Belgian sommelier and owner of Michelin starred restaurant The Glorious. The four gins are based on 24 different botanicals, each distilled separately, with the appropriate distillates then blended to make each gin.
Unusually, even the base spirit used to make this gin is made by master distiller Patrick De Keersmaecker at the same small craft distillery on his organic farm in Emblem near Antwerp using cereals grown on the farm.
This “Spring” variant of the four seasonal gins label proclaims it to be “The floral gin with roses” and indeed 10kg of rose petals are used for every 300 litres of spirit made. The black matt bottle hides this gin’s amber hue and is graced with a scratch-and-sniff back label.
Sampled on 06/02/2016
Slight haze with some sediment, deep copper bronze amber.
Very floral, rose petal, soapy notes, raspberry fruit, juniper, lemon zest and mild spice.
Prickly peppery spice, overly dominant rose water and off-putting bitter rooty notes.
Dry, spicy, rose water and lingering rooty bitterness.
Rose water and rooty bitterness overly dominate this “gin”.
