Review and Tasting

Sampled on 24/11/2016

Appearance

(sample bottles 2015 vintage) Clear, golden amber with flecks of burnish copper.

Aroma

Cinnamon, cardamom, clove and zesty orange with light nuttiness. One sample bottle has distinctive Indian spices with faint ash, the other is fruitier with dried apricot.

Taste

Of the two sample bottles we sent, one is more fruity with zesty orange, dried apricot and clove with bitter bark and nutty rootiness. The other is way too bitter and spicy. Both are lightly dosed with sugar - perhaps a little too lightly, lacking the rich mouthfeel and balance of traditional Italian amari.

Aftertaste

Again, bitter notes overly dominate one sample with lingering cigarette ash-like notes. While the better of the two samples has lingering zesty orange and bitter spice.

Overall

Amaro may mean ‘bitter’, but dependent on batch, this particular example may be overly so. Even the better of our two samples was a tad too bitter and suited to mixing rather than being enjoyed neat on-the-rocks as is traditional of an Italian amaro. We look forward to the 2016 vintage.
