Described as a “sparkling lemon flavoured mixer”, most of us will recognise this as a bitter lemon. Ingredients: carbonated water, sugar, lemon juice from concentrate (4.5%), citric acid, lemon extract, flavourings (contains quinine), stabilisers (E1450, E445, E444) and Potassium Sorbate.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 15/08/2017

Appearance:

(sample bottle best before 05/Oct/17) Cloudy with large sedimentary particles. Grey, almost milky.

Aroma:

Zesty lemon and grapefruit with light quinine.

Taste:

Lemon zest and cooked lemon juice. Fairly sweet but this is partially balanced by high carbonation, quinine bitterness and citric acidity.

Aftertaste:

Lingering sweet and sour lemon.

Overall:

Compared to other bitter lemons, Merchant’s Heart is perhaps more lemony than bitter with quinine fairly subdued. It’s appearance is let down by large sedimentary particles.
