BÉBO is made with hard to source 100% Arabica Cuban coffee which is cultivated and hand-picked by cooperatives in the mountains of the Sierra Maestra in the eastern part of the island. With just 100 grams of sugar per litre, BÉBO has the minimum sugar content permissible to still be termed a liqueur

BÉBO liqueur is presented in a shapely tall round bespoke bottle with a distinctive label depicting a dapper hummingbird resplendent in Panama hat and bowtie. The brand imagery and name is routed in the back story of Club Bébo. “According to the legend, the origins of BÉBO go back to a secret underground club in Havana called Club Bébo: the place where artists, celebrities and other free spirits met when they wanted to be together, without any outsiders. The most popular drink was a mixture of rum and Señora Bébo’s famous Cuban coffee – always served in coffee cups, in case the authorities or other unwanted guests might suddenly show up. Through the Café Bébo – a nondescript corner shop – you could gain passage into the club, if you ordered your coffee ‘Mucho gusto!’.”

Café Mucho Gusto, the brand’s signature serve is an equal parts Espresso Martini with a spoon of sugar:

Café Mucho Gusto
30 ml Bebo
30 ml fresh espresso
30 ml Vodka (or mezcal)
1 bar spoon fine sugar

Launched in October 2017, BÉBO is free of artificial colours and aromas, including the addition of caramel.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 12/10/2017

Appearance:

Clear, deep tawny brown but noticeably lighter in colour than most other coffee liqueurs.

Aroma:

Heavily roasted/slightly burnt coffee beans with cinnamon, chicory and faint smokiness.

Taste:

Comparatively dry when compared other coffee liqueurs and thinner in body. Faintly smoky dark roasted coffee with very mild cinnamon spice and chicory notes.

Aftertaste:

Long delicately smoky roast coffee with faint cinnamon spice, chicory and dark chocolate.

Overall:

Perhaps it’s the faint wisps of smoke in this characterful and relatively dry coffee liqueur that suggest using mezcal in place of vodka in an Espresso Martini. However, we’d suggest to fully appreciate BÉBO you make a Café Mucho Gusto – an Espresso Martini with BÉBO and well-aged Cuban rum in place of vodka.
