Released 1st November 2017, the third of Portobello Road Gin’s limited editions was inspired by Pechuga Mezcal. Pechuga translates from Spanish as ‘breast’, a reference to the breast of a chicken or a turkey being suspend the in the still during distillation.
Accordingly, and appropriately for a Christmas release, this gin was distilled with a turkey breast, supplied by West London butcher C. Lidgate, suspended in the 400 litre copper alembic still. This still was charged with Portobello Road’s signature 171 blend on 25th October 2017 and redistilling with 13 botanicals: apples, pears, plums, currants, raisins, sultanas, apricots, brown rice, passion fruit, cinnamon, cassia bark, nutmeg and mace.
Sampled on 11/11/2017
(sample bottle No. 2191) Crystal clear.
Cinnamon and raisin dominate with nutmeg and comparatively light piney juniper.
Piney juniper leads with assertive cinnamon and black pepper spice. There’s an attractive rum and raison note to the complex spice.
More cinnamon and raisin follow in the more classily London dry-style piney finish.
Turkey breast notes are far from obvious in what is perhaps more aptly described as a cinnamon gin with notes of Dentine. Apart from raisin and sultana, fruit notes (apples, pear and passionfruit) are also restrained. This suitably festive, spicy gin has generous piney juniper and Jake Burger’s wit. It makes a tasty G&T and as it says on the back label, “Feliz Navidad y feliz año nuevo!” (Merry Christmas and happy new year!)
