This Greek gin, distilled with 12 botanicals, takes its names from R.M.S. Mataroa (1922 -1957), a historic New Zealand ship sailed the Mediterranean Sea during the 1940s.
Mataroa Gin's 12 botanicals are sourced from 11 Mediterranean countries - one from each country and two from France:
Croatia - Juniper Berries
France - Angelica Root and Lavender
Tunisia - Coriander Seeds
Italy - Orris Root
Syria - Bay Leaf
Turkey - Liquorice
Spain - Orange peel
Egypt - Lemon peel
Morocco - Mandarin peels
Cyprus - Chamomile
South Chios, Greece - Mastic
Sampled on 01/10/2019
Crystal clear.
Bay leaf and liquorice most influence the piney juniper-forward nose.
Bone dry, complex and well-integrated. Piney juniper sits alongside herbal, rooty and citrusy notes with very subtle but noticeable mastic freshness.
Clean and cleansing with lingering juniper, liquorice, bay leaf and mastic.
With its pronounced piney juniper, Mataroa will not offend London dry traditionalists but its well-integrated Mediterranean flavours, particularly bay leaf and mastic will appeal to those seeking gins expressing characteristics from their origin.
