Launched in September 2020 as a UK exclusive bottling, the first striking thing about this new Gold Label expression is that the label is black, white and red with "Gold Label" written in gold but in such a small font that this golden detail is easily overlooked.

Power's Distiller's Cut has a generous pot still character and is aged between five and six years in American oak ex-bourbon barrels.

First established in 1791 in Dublin's John's Lane Distillery, like other heritage Irish whiskey brands in Pernod Ricard's portfolio, Powers is now made at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 25/11/2020

Appearance:

Clear, mid-deep golden amber.

Aroma:

Buttery vanilla fudge, digestive biscuit, cinnamon and nutmeg spice with zesty mandarin orange and peach skin.

Taste:

More buttery fudge and biscuit with enlivening cinnamon, freshening zesty orange, and peach melba. A splash of water brings out attractive baked apple.

Aftertaste:

Vanilla, pencil shavings, chocolate eclair, and cinnamon spice.

Overall:

Pot still spice with attractive orange, peach, and apple fruitiness characterises Powers Distiller's Cut. As the bottle's neck label hints, Powers is bold compared to its "smooth" Jameson stablemate.
