This port-like wine is produced by Rimon Winery and is fermented from 100% pomegranate juice with no added sugar. Jews in the congregation will be relived to hear that Galilee Pomegranate is certified kosher, while herbivores will be equally pleased that the wine has The Vegan Society support.

The pomegranates used are cultivated by the Nachmais family, whose winery is located amongst their orchards, 3,000 feet above sea level in Upper Galilee, Israel. They employ techniques similar to those used in port production, with fermentation interrupted by the addition of fermented pomegranate juice. The resulting high alcohol, sweet wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak casks in the winery’s “sun room”.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 16/09/2010

Appearance:

Dark purple/maroon in colour.

Aroma:

Wine-like with red fruit notes and a subtle spiciness and fresh basil-like aromas.

Taste:

Surprisingly full-flavoured, slightly sweet but restrained with tannic, woody notes. The flavour is reminiscent of a blend of pomegranate juice, red pepper and tannic red wine.

Aftertaste:

The finish is much drier than the palate.
