Distilled in in 2000 at Jamaica’s Hampden Distillery on the North West of the island.

Neil Mathieson (Managing Director of specialist drinks importers Eau de Vie) started laying down stocks of rum in the 1990, continually adding “suitable bulk fillings” over the years. The result is the Mezan Barrique XO and Mezan Single Cask rum range, all bottled without filtration, colouring or sweetening. Bottled under contract, these are released once or twice a year depending on sales and Neil’s stated ethos is to continue this, “offering completely natural rums with no further cask influence, through wood or wine finishing.”

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 08/11/2010

Appearance:

Clear, pale straw golden.

Aroma:

Wonderfully pungent with vanilla, linseed oil, yacht vanish and banana cake.

Taste:

Slightly sweet, full bodied, buttery, banana cake palate with oaky tannins, walnut nuttiness, cinnamon and cumin seed spice.

Aftertaste:

Long, lightly spiced, buttery finish with mild oak influence. Fades with lingering old fashioned oil paint bitterness.
