Despite the maraschino liqueur, this Martini-style cocktail is dry and punchy

I am surprised that the extensive discussion does not point out that this drink is basically a dry vermouth sibling of the Martinez (with an added dash of absinthe). In the end I think I prefer the Martinez, or a proper 3:1 martini.
