Grapefruit really dominates the flavors in this recipe, and the maraschino can't compensate for the bitterness. I may try cutting the grapefruit by 50%.

Just a guess but some grapefruit is quite bitter. Mine was not and the resultant cocktail was nicely balanced , tho grapefruit forward
