Okay, so that does suggest a cork problem. The reason that wine racks exist is to keep the wine in constant contact with the cork when in storage. When that doesn't occur the cork can deteriorate and go off. Most retailers don't understand that when it comes to, for example, vermouths so they store and display them standing upright. And, as you say, there's no telling how long any bottle has been sitting on the shelf.

Yeah it was definitely stored upright the whole time.
