I used a lemony, hibiscus, hoppy Navy Strength (Vigilant 57%) gin and it really drove home those phantom grapefruit notes. Using fresh, raw cider from the orchard also contributed to very nice, easy drinking pleasure. It kind of sneaks up on you that way.
