Strega was established in 1860 when Giuseppe Alberti and his apothecary father revised an ancient recipe for a herbal liqueur. According to local legend this was brewed by witches and used as a love potion - and this is how it got its name (Strega is the Italian word for witch).

Today, this classic herb-based liqueur is still produced in the same historical building next to the train station in Benevento and exported to more than 50 countries worldwide.

Strega liqueur is distilled from a combination of 70 different herbs and spices. These are sourced from Europe, Central America and the Orient. The recipe is a closely guarded secret, handed down through five generations of the Alberti family, with only two people at any one time knowing the exact blend of ingredients. However, it is known that ingredients include: cinnamon from Ceylon, juniper from the Italian Apennino and wild mint from the river banks around Benevento. Saffron gives the liqueur its distinctive golden yellow hue. Strega is aged in oak casks prior to bottling.

Newer products such as a limoncello, sambuca and grappa are now also produced.
