Over little more than a decade Shoreditch has turned from being an area of prostitution and urban deprivation to trendy central. What was once a virtual no go area has become one of London’s key night life destinations.
Back in the 1990s two types of Shoreditch bar emerged. Us ‘new’ media folk (our office was there) headed to bars with stereotypical industrial interiors with exposed brickwork, aircon ducting and bare concrete. While city boys who had had trekked up Shoreditch High Street for some depravity headed to the lap/pole dancing venues. Draught beer was the drink of choice, no matter which camp you were in.
The industrial media bars and the lap/pole dancing venues are still there today but so are high-end cocktail lounge bars and large venues catering to the mass market with everything else in between. The draught beer remains but is in danger of being outsold by premium bottled beers, Mojitos and cocktails in general. Shoreditch has gone mass market.
