Lying in the belly of a vast landmark hotel on London's Southbank, Dandelyan boasts a stunning location overlooking the River Thames. This is the place for hip 20 and 30-somethings to be and be seen on the Southbank, but we are drawn by what is one of the most creative and well-executed cocktail menus in the world. If perhaps not the most approachable for consumers.
The interior design by Tom Dixon is best described as Ikea meets gentleman's club with a blond wood slatted ceiling, green marble bar counter and an oak herringbone floor. Mismatched sofas, tub chairs and pink leather banquettes dot the huge space.
Ryan Chetiyawardana, A.K.A Mr Lyan, and his team have taken "a nose to tail approach to plants" to create a "modern botany" menu with imaginative and interestingly different cocktails grouped under headings in a small pamphlet-like book. Throw caution to the wind and don't read the ingredients in each. Instead skip to the back pages of the menu and use the flavour map to guide you to your drink of choice. Or give up and order a classic cocktail.
The bar food lives up to the standard of the drinks and the cod cheeks are worthy of a trip here on their own.
