The first release of Middleton Very Rare to be selected by Master Distiller Brain Nation, following the retirement of the much respected Barry Crockett, who blended the first annual release of Midleton Very Rare back in 1984.

Midleton Very Rare is blended from single pot still and grain whiskeys matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels. Very Rare is indeed just that - only 25,000 individually numbered bottles are produced each year. The blend changes from year to year according to the whim of master distiller - first Barry Crockett and now Brain Nation, who creates it from more than 100 casks, some for more than 20 years.

This bottling does not carry an age statement but we are told "The components of this exclusive blend have been aged or up to 22 years.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 17/08/2014

Appearance:

Clear, pale golden amber.

Aroma:

Buttery chargrilled sweet corn, marsh mellow, vanilla and cinnamon with faint green apple and banana.

Taste:

Delicate, mellow and refined. Popcorn, vanilla and cinnamon spice with light bready barley, green apple and faint earthy liquorice.

Aftertaste:

Liquorice is more noticeable on the lightly roasted barley finish with its ever so gentle cinnamon spice.
