Known as Raynal in some markets and Three Barrels in Britain, this is the leading brand of French non-appellation grape brandy with annual sales over 2.5 million bottles. The Three Barrels name derives from 19th century Canada where three barrels were the most that huskies could pull on a sledge.
The Raynal company was founded by two brothers in the early part of the 19th century and sold to Moët-Hennessy in 1974. Raynal regained its independence in 1999, thanks to a group of venture capitalists led by Patrice Quatravaux. William Grant & Sons acquired Raynal et Cie in October 2005.

At around half the price of a three star cognac, this silky easy-drinking French brandy may lack the depth and complexity of more serious brandies but represents great value for money – even at a mere 38% alc./vol.. Candied fruit, green grapes, raisins, almond, caramel and faint crystallised ginger.
