Launched in 1874, the label of Martel's 'Very Superior Old Pale' cognac bears a gold medallion engraved with a portrait of Louis XIV, in the last year of whose reign (1715) Martell was founded.

Martell V.S.O.P. is blended from around 30 to 50 different eaux-de-vie with Fins Bois being the highest proportion of the blend along with some Petit Champagne to add character. The eaux-de-vie used is typically aged for more than four years with some eau-de-vie in the blend as old as ten years.

Appearance:

Clear, golden amber.

Aroma:

Blackened fruitcake, mocha coffee, candied cherry and nuts with raisin, prune, candied orange and violet blossom.

Taste:

Caramel, coffee and vanilla with candied cherry, green grapes, raisin, nutmeg and cinnamon spice.

Aftertaste:

Toffee, vanilla fudge, blackened fruitcake, nutmeg and cinnamon spice. Fades with toasted almond, marzipan and dry black tea leaves.

Overall:

Fruity blackened fruitcake with a pinch of spice, caramel and mocha coffee.
