One of Diageo's 2015 Special Releases, this is the 15th such release of Port Ellen. This release was drawn from refill European oak butts from three different fill dates.

Review and Tasting

Appearance:

Clear, deep golden amber.

Aroma:

Buttery with overripe banana, old leather and freshly cut grass. With water char-grilled pepper, elegant toasty oak and vanilla emerge.

Taste:

Rich and fruity with characterful vegetal and smoky peat, and chamois leather. Water amplifies vegetal notes with salty seaweed.

Aftertaste:

Smoky dried fruit and leathery finish.

Overall:

Stocks of this very rare and sought after malt are dwindling and every year the price what little Port Ellen that survives rises quicker than a Mayfair penthouse. A bottle of this 2015 release is eminently more affordable with surprising fruitiness and vanilla for a 32 year old whisky.
