‘Cockney’ is the name given to a Londoner born within earshot of Bow Bells, the bells of St Mary-le-Bow at the top of London’s Bow Lane and indeed this brand of gin was first distilled in 1838 in Ghent, Belgian by a travelling Londoner.
The name Cockney's Distillery can still be read over the door of his former distillery. After this Englishman returned to London the distillery passed to Jules De Brabandere and then in the 1920s, the first of three generations of the Hoste family before the present owner Luc Waterschoot, who is also the distiller of this gin.
The original Cockney's Gin was distilled with three botanicals: juniper, coriander and gentian but today’s Cockney's Gin boasts 18 botanicals including: juniper, coriander, gentian, angelica root, cumin, paradise seed, liquorice, grapefruit and bitter orange.
